1st Discussion!

Did you know anything about Sudan before reading the book? If not have you learned anything new so far from reading?

Search for something about Sudan that you did not already know and post what you find.

Try to find something interesting and something that will make readers understand the book more.

Good luck :)

I myself did not know anything about Sudan before reading the book, but I have heard of the Lost Boys Foundation.

My interesting fact about Sudan is that between May 16, 1983 and January 9, 2005 over two and a half million people died of war and war-related causes in Sudan, over four million people were internally displaced in southern Sudan and nearly two million southern Sudanese took refuge in foreign countries.

I honestly knew nothing about Sudan before reading the book. I have also heard of the Lost Boys Foundation.

My interesting facts on Sudan are:
636,900 are how many main telephones are in use.
4.683 million Cell phones are used.
21 internet hosts.
3.5 million Internet users.
3 TV broadcast stations.

I knew nothing of Sudan before starting What Is the What. Never have I heard of the Lost Boys Foundation before now.

*Interesting fact on Sudan:
As of April 23, 2008 Sudan began its first census in 15 years. Around 60,000 enumerators, monitored by 200 observers, will count the estimated 40 million population, costing Sudan and the international community $103 million.

In the 2005 agreement signed by the former warring north and south, the two-week census is crucial to prepare constituencies for national elections and confirm or adjust the wealth and power-sharing ratios in central government. The south has refused to be bound by the results and rebels in Darfur will boycott the count, both accusing the Arab north of manipulating the census to maximise its control and marginalise the African majority.
